| I copied this artical from another site but I am hoping it rings true. I am hoping better days coming to GC!!!!
RING HER BELL Y&R co-head writer, Maria Arena Bell’s ratings war strategy revealed
Anyone who watched The 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards this past month was keenly force-fed the fact that The Young and the Relentless is still the No. 1 soap opera on air. Anyone with a brain cell, of course, knows that this dubious distinction and a token will get you on the subway. During the past year, Y&R has slid in the ratings at a dramatic rate, thanks to shady and dodgy management decisions (yes, we mean you, Babs).
Let’s review: the gap between Y&R (3.4 rating) and the lowest-rated soap, Guiding Light (1.6 rating) is getting narrower by the week. Surely, that’s nothing to boast about considering William Bell’s juggernaut masterpiece was light years in being dethroned during the past two decades.
Ratings aside, what’s truly alarming is that during the past couple of years Y&R — formerly the most consistent soap opera in soap history — has been floundering in the creative department ever since head writer, Jack Smith was fired in favour of FOB, Lynn Marie Latham. (FYI: Latham was hired by her friend, CBS executive Barbara Bloom, who according to Wikipedia, also wrote Y&R breakdowns from June to December 2007!)
However, the bell has rung signalling the dawn of a new era in Genoa City. Thanks to the wise appointments of executive producer, Josh Griffith, and co-head writer, Maria Arena Bell, this summer will reportedly erase the past two years from our memory. And they don’t even need Finola Hughes (Anna, General Hospital) to realize this miracle.
Gone are plot-driven storylines, hair models posing as actors (OK, there are a few still posturing about, but we’ll overlook that for now), an unhappy cast, staged sweeps events, and most important, a Bell is finally back in charge. Add a real — read: intelligent, savvy, resourceful and passionate — executive producer, Josh Griffith at the helm, and “it” writer Hogan Sheffer lending his creative prowess to the zeitgeist sudser, and it appears as if William Bell’s legacy is finally being respected. Maria Arena Bell, Sony Pictures
TV Guide.ca spoke to Bell’s daughter-in-law on what viewers can expect this summer and beyond. Thankfully, reliquaries need not apply!
TVGuide.ca: It’s an honour to speak to you and finally meet you. So tell me, are you psyched about working with four-time Emmy winner, Hogan Sheffer as your co-head writer? Maria Bell: Yes! It’s fantastic having Hogan aboard. He’s super-talented and fun to work with! He’s a riot.
TVG: I bet! I’m a huge fan of his work, especially when he’s given the luxury of autonomy to write the show he’s been hired to pen. I don’t believe he wrote Days of Our Lives for one second, which was really sad because Days wouldn’t be in such dire straits these days. MB: [Nods in agreement] No, he didn’t. But we have him now! And, I bet you’re going to be happy with what we have in store.
TVG: You and Sheffer will make a really balanced team, in my opinion. I have to give you major props for righting all the wrongs LML left in her wake by filling the blanks and restoring integrity back to William’s characters. MB: I’m glad for your words of encouragement. We’re heading into story this summer that I swear will knock your socks off! Just wait…
TVG: Can you tease me without spoiling story? I am not a fan of storyline preview but can you give my readers a sense of what to expect. With all due respect, Y&R has been boring and uneven this past year, but I understand that’s the realities of a creative transition. MB: Well, let me start off by saying I doubt you’ll be disappointed! We have the show where we want it now to move ahead. It’s going to be an amazing summer where a catalytic event will change Genoa City forever. And, it involves all our core characters…
TVG: [sarcastically] No epilepsy, right? MB: [Smiles] No epilepsy, I promise you! I can say it’s going to be edge-of-your-seat drama!
TVG: Hogan’s a bit more campy and sensational than the traditional Bell writing formula… MB: Which is good, because we balance each other out in those departments, and we’ve been careful to maintain a definite balance [between those two worlds]. This summer event [we’re approaching towards] is the result of storyline, which has been airing for the past four months. Hogan’s influence is fantastic, because he understands what I have been trying to do and heading towards. We’re working really well together.
TVG: Hallelujah; that’s so rare these days and so reassuring to hear. When does your work as a team debut? MB: Early August.
TVG: Unfortunately, Y&R’s ratings slid dramatically after Genoa City started to make sense — despite an initial spike during the writers’ strike — that had to be frustrating… MB: [groans] Trust me, it’s frustrating for everyone, including me.
TVG: Well, I’m hoping you and Hogan can reclaim your 4.0 rating. At ATWT, he won Emmys and ratings love. It can be done. Have you asked your brother-in-law, B&B chief Bradley Bell for advice? MB: We used to be writing partners way back when in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. It was a lot of fun, but you know, there’s a lot of cross-town family rivalry, too! Each of us want to come out on top, and be No.1! [Laughs] Which I think is healthy…
TVG: Competition inspires everyone to bring his or her A-game. As you know, Y&R is so popular in Canada it airs on prime time! MB: I love Y&R, and I want it to be good. Thank you; we love our Canadian fans.
TVG: It feels right that a Bell is back at the helm. As it should be, I think. MB: It does feel right. I worked for my father-in-law [William Bell] long before we were family and right by his side, so I learned a lot from the master. I feel his presence while I write this beautiful and classic show, and his writing style and mine are very similar. I hope we’re bringing that infamous Bell tradition and storytelling ability back to the show. I feel like he’s watching over us, I really do. A day doesn’t go by when I don’t think of him. Y&R is a legacy.
TVG: And your cast isn’t so bad either. Heck, you’ve even made me like Adrienne Frantz [Amber]… [laughs] MB: I am blessed with the most talented cast on daytime. How could I go wrong?
TVG: Knock on wood! |

NICK AND PHYLLIS ARE THE BEST LOOKING TOGETHER!!

I'll say. Some humor can be welcome on a soap, but these two are ridiculous, IMO. And when you consider that neither one of them is a light and fluffy character it makes it all the harder to stomach, LOL. They are both selfish and manipulative, not light humor to me. Time to make them both pay for their past behavior and move the characters forward. This old fight with the Abbotts is getting stale. Time for the Bardwells to do something other than obsess about Jabot. Like take a honeymoon far away, LOL. Then we can take some time to show Phyllis and Nick at home for a change maybe. Or give them a storyline outside of RS. When you think of it, they should have more of a partnership with how to deal with Victor and Adam. Seems all the writers want Phyllis to do anymore is stand around and nod in agreement. This high school storyline of messing with Daniel's emails is beneath the character, IMO. She should be front and center with helping Nick deal with his family. The OLD Phyllis sure would have been. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest, LOL! |

| lol, WV Andi, tell us how you really feel?I have been disapointed more with Y&R the last two years, than I have any other soap since I started watching them.Early 80's/when vcr's first came out. The bitch LML chased me away from Y&R. |
